The Internet
The Internet has surfaced as the most reliable and cheapest means of communication in Armenia. It is slower then the west, the main pipe is often clogged (Armentel, the Greek-run Telecom monopoly has not invested in an adequate connection). But, if you have access to the Internet, you also have access to free internet telephony and e-mail. For PC-to-PC calls, this is free (but Armentel is trying to crack down on this, so you should have your ICQ, MSN, AOL chat set to work from the host's web site--and you may not be able to use headsets on local ISP computers--many will work with you to go around this block so check). There are ISP offices in all major towns, Yerevan has over 50 in the center. Normal baud rate is 14,400 to 28,800 bps. Internet cafes have dial up and satellite or microwave-connections.
