A New Scientific Network for Armenia

With as much promise as it shows, Research Science in Armenia is still a fraction of its pre-collapse strength, with most of the next generation of researchers emigrating in search of jobs and a dying generation of "great ones" who are too attached, or otherwise unable to leave. This brain drain is a serious deterrent to the development of science in Armenia, exacerbated by government double-speak: on one side encouraging the return of young émigrés with the skills needed to revive the sector, but on the other side jailing or drafting those of army age that do return, assigning them into menial, non-scientific jobs. A common complaint from older scientists, is the well-known army policy of demanding bribes to release scientific researchers of army age from the army so they can continue their work, further driving them from the field.

Today, despite budgetary difficulties, science in Armenia continues to survive, if at a much reduced pace.  A very small portion of the funding for Science in Armenia comes from the Armenian Government. However, international funding of science in Armenia is critical to the survival of science in Armenia as well as to the wealth of knowledge the Armenian Scientists can add to the international community.
