Ratings
The rating is price of a one-course meal with side dish and/or soup or salad. Drinks not included.

C = less then $5 (many $1-$3)
$ is $5-10
$$ is $10-20
$$$ is $20+

Prices based on Winter -2002 prices, subject to change without notice. Use any pricing as a benchmark only.
_______________________________________________________

Center has a few notable restaurants (see Dolmama), but it mainly caters to the business/tourist class who think $20 is cheap. Since $20 is more than the average pension in Armenia, it constitutes highway robbery by local standards. Go a little further out (NOTHING is far in Yerevan) and you will get just as good, more of it, and cheaper.

KRAKOW - $+
Armenian, Russian, Polish
29/2 Tumanian St.
Tel: (374 1) 562-020
Notes: open 11:00-20:00, no longer the rare find it once was: a classic service with European fare. The new owners have kept the atmosphere, but their menu is typical cutlets and potatoes, and with everything served a la carte, this can easily set you back $10 before you get to the wine list.

Trendy cafe with indifferent service when busy, food can be quite good, also can be tasteless. This has been the place to be seen for expats, but it is on one of the most dusty corners in Yerevan.

ARMENIAN & CONTINENTAL CUISINE
Government House #2, Hanrapetutian Square
Tel: (374 1) 527-933, 527-382
Notes: The restaurant "Ararat" was the haunt of Armenian Greats Nersissian, Shiraz , Isahakian, Saroyan, Babajanian, Khachaturian, Charles Aznavour, Kasparov and Spivakov. It is doubtful that the early greats would ever have frequented this overly done remake. The food is OK to good, they push you to the limits with hors d'oeuvres, but ,still, there are visitors for whom a trip to Yerevan is not complete with a pilgrimage to the once great house of artists and thinkers. Credit Cards accepted

ASTAFIAN COMPLEX - $$
URL:

Armenian, Continental Cuisine
5/1 Abovian St.

"Exotic foods", Indian-Armenian-Middle Eastern mix
Hotel Armenia, Republic Square
Notes: It's still hotel food.

MONTE CRISTO
Italian Street, just above Congress Hotel, opposite Shahumian Statue
French operated Restaurant and Gay/Lesbian Disco.
Food: $20-30 per person for French menu. Snacks around 3000 drams. Guard at front entrance is obnoxious, willing to kill before letting you in. Talk to one of the servers for help.
Gay/Lesbian Disco: $5-10 entry, drinks for $2-5 each. Music loud and forceful. This is not for the feint of heart, after hours in the nearby alley could make a Frenchman blush.

MOSKWA Restaurant - $$
Russian, Continental
Abovian and Tumanian St.
Notes: this used to the highest priced place in town, now reasonable and quite good Russian fare. Not budget at $10-15 on average, but very good for the Russian-minded.

PEKING CHINESE Restaurant - $$
Chinese Cuisine
5 Amirian Street, across and near Karaoke
Notes: We loved it when it was new, now it has gotten a bit stingy on portions and unduly high on prices. Was a joint-venture with Chinese Embassy staff, they aren't saying now. Lotus and Chinese on Mashtots better and cheaper.

SHAHNAZAR - $$
Arabic and Chinese cuisines
5 Amirian St.
Notes: same as Peking, same ingredients, spices, different recipes.

$$$                                            $20+

E-mail:
yerhot@arminco.com
Notes: Well! So this is how the 5% live! Once a thriving café culture for the artists and thinkers of Armenia, now a high class joint. Expats and Diaspora SO love to be seen here. No matter how they dress it, Italian is only Italian in Italy.
